Dot Day

For this activity, we start by reading the book The Dot by Peter H Reynolds. In the story, there is a girl who thinks she cannot draw, but then her teacher encourages her to start with a dot, and then she starts creating many different dots and feels more confident doing art. After the story, we were asked to make our dots. The supplies we used were coffee filters, oil pastels, markers, and watercolors. We started with the dry materials (markers and oil pastels) and then used water to spread it out on the coffee filter. Then we went in with watercolor to fill in where more color was needed.

For an extension activity, the students can all make their unique dots, and then, as a class, they can write their names on them. Then we could create a bulletin board with a tree trunk and their dots to create a class family tree to display in the classroom or hallway.
