Pumpkin Oil Pastel Drawing

This activity was focused on drawing with oil pastels. First, the lesson started by practicing drawing pumpkins. After that, we took a black piece of paper and drew a pumpkin and moon on it with a black marker. Then, we used the moonlight as a basis of where our shadows would be on our pumpkin. Then, we used yellow to draw our shadows on the pumpkin and then used light orange and dark orange to create contrast. To blend it all in, we used our fingers to create a smooth look. Then, we filled in the background and smoothed that as well. After the drawing was complete, we used glue to outline where the black marker was and highlight the outline of the pumpkin once it was dry.

For an extension activity, students could learn about how pumpkins grow, and as a class, we could grow our own and use that as a basis to the drawing. The students can place the pumpkin in different parts of the classroom and focus on the shadows in the place in the classroom.
